Doctor Who was always experimental in the technology it used. Less often acknowledged are the series’ experiments in form. These are particularly notable in the first few years of the series, around which time the wider world of BBC television drama was similarly experimenting.
Great post. I love the 60s period of Doctor Who and this is one of many reasons why. Not strictly related but I also liked when the show deviated away from its traditional title card/sequence in favour of something unique (The War Machines, The Tenth Planet, The War Games, etc) - it helped give a distinct flavour to their respective serial/s.
Marco Polo also made use of narration and overlays of maps, I believe. I wish Doctor Who had continued visual experiments and different directorial choices beyond the 60s.
Agreed on all counts. I should probbaly have mentioned Marco Polo too - I might add that in later, we'll see. The Smugglers also had an unsual opening with a shot of London from The War Machines cut into the titles (perhaps showing ben and Poly entering the TARDIS but it's not clear). Would love to see that.
