Great post. I love the 60s period of Doctor Who and this is one of many reasons why. Not strictly related but I also liked when the show deviated away from its traditional title card/sequence in favour of something unique (The War Machines, The Tenth Planet, The War Games, etc) - it helped give a distinct flavour to their respective serial/s.

Marco Polo also made use of narration and overlays of maps, I believe. I wish Doctor Who had continued visual experiments and different directorial choices beyond the 60s.

Agreed on all counts. I should probbaly have mentioned Marco Polo too - I might add that in later, we'll see. The Smugglers also had an unsual opening with a shot of London from The War Machines cut into the titles (perhaps showing ben and Poly entering the TARDIS but it's not clear). Would love to see that.
